General Notes: Husband - Fulton Boyd Hovis
He was born in an old log house (near the Bullion schoolhouse) in Clinton Township, and remained at home until he commenced work in the oil fields. However, he was trained to agricultural work from boyhood and followed it mainly, settling on his farm in Irwin Township when he married, and taking charge of it from that time. It was the property of his wife's father and comprised 140 acres. The land was always valuable for general farming, and under his wise care is was good as it had ever been, his liberal use of the limestone on the tract enhanced its productiveness to an appreciable degree. There is a fine limestone quarry on the farm, which Mr. Hovis worked steadily, selling as much as eighteen hundred tons of rock in a year, besides taking out enough for his own use. Mr. Hovis also improved the property in the matter of buildings, replacing all the old structures with the substantial ones now standing about 1907.
Mr. Hovis took an active part in the administration of township affairs, having held a number of local offices, and serving multiple terms as assessor. He was a Prohibitionist in religious principle. The Pleasant View M. E. Church had his support and cooperation for many years, and he was a trustee of both church and cemetery. He was a class leader, was associated with the Bible class thirty years and taught in the Sunday school for twenty-five years, his interest extending to all branches of the work. His various activities kept him well occupied, but when he spared time for vacations he enjoyed hunting trips especially. [CAB, 831]
Another grandchild, Edna Grace Hovis, was a member of their household.
