Pearl Smail Holmes, a cousin, wrote the following about his death:
"He had gone to pay his taxes, but never got there. He was found one week later in a wood section laying on his side. No one could find him because his clothing was dark. There was a lot of people looking for him, even had a helicopter. . . His money and tax cards were still on him so it wasn't foul play."
