General Notes: Husband - Jeremiah Ensensee Smail

At the time of the 1870 U. S. Census for Pennsylvania, the family was in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County. Ten years later the census taker found him and his wife, and their three children in Pleasant Valley Township, near Pawnee Rock, in Pawnee County, Kansas. They must have been there only a short time as their youngest child at the time was born in Pennsylvania in March of the preceding year. They lived for two years in a dugout at Pawnee Rock. Next, they moved to Dresden Township in Kingman County, Kansas, where they lived in a three-room sod house which they built. They were in Kingman County at the time of the 1900 Census. It was there that Jerry ran a cane mill. By occupation he was a farmer and a traveling Baptist preacher. In 1909 Sarah and her daughters, Minnie and Elmo, and Elmo's husband, moved to Arrow Creek, Montana, where Walter and Bertha had already homesteaded. Jerry last visted Montana in 1918. According to his son, Walter, he was killed in Texas in a dispute over a line fence. His place of burial is not known.
