General Notes: Husband - John T. Straw

He was born in Ferguson township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and attended school in his native county and later taught school, following which he became a farmer and lumberman and spent his life as a resident of Ferguson township. He was a man of local prominence and in 1881 was elected on the Democratic ticket, a member of the board of county commissioners and served through one full term. He was a member and substantial supporter of the Baptist church.

He attended schools in Lawrence, Ferguson and Jordan Townships, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and afterward taught school for some time. He became a farmer and bought a farm of 200 acres in Ferguson
Township. He had about 60 acres cleared and still retained some valuable woodland. Mr. Straw also owned 100 acres of fine coal land in Greenwood Township, had a house and lot at Kerrmoor and an improved lot at Marron. He was a stockholder in the Ferguson and La Jose Telephone Company, of Ferguson Township, and was a charter stockholder in the Farmers and Traders Bank at Clearfield.

His first purchase of land was of 100 acres and later he bought a second 100 acres, on which he lived for three years and then returned to his first farm. He was always an ardent Democrat and was influential in party affairs in his section. He was elected county commissioner of Clearfield County in 1882 and served until 1885. For fourteen years he served as school director in Ferguson township. With his wife and family he belonged to Zion Baptist church. He was interested in the Patrons of Husbandry. About 1909 an attack of rheumatism caused him to relieve himself of many of his responsibilities, turning them over to his sons.
