He came to own the mill property built by his grandfather, as well as the seventy-six acres given by Peter Wise to his daughter, Mrs. Hannah Zollars.
He was educated at Greene Academy and Waynesburgh College, Pennsylvania, at which institution his wife graduated in the class of 1854. He was engaged in teaching for ten years, and then turned his attention to farming and stock raising. He owned about two hundred acres of the original Fishery tract, a part of which he inherited from his father. He served multiple terms as justice of the peace.
