He was educated at Washington and Jefferson College, and admitted to the bar of Washington County, Pennsylvania, in September, 1880. He soon came to Pittsburgh, and was admitted to the Allegheny County bar in January, 1881. With Mr. T. S. Brown he formed the firm of Brown & Stewart. He was an adherent of the republican party, and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Wilkinsburg, where he dwelt for some years.
