He was educated in the common schools of the Hickory Township, Mercer County, PA, and at Kingsville Academy, in Ohio, and turned his attention to teaching, following it as an occupation for some years, in connection with farming. He was a member of the Presbyte­rian Church of Clarksville, and in politics was a Republican.
