He was well educated, having graduated from the normal school at Grove City, Pennsylvania. Subsequently he was engaged in the office of an oil company at Brookville, but after his grandfather's death he made his home with his grandmother and took charge of the operation of the farm; he also taught at Cherry Valley, four miles away.
