He grew up in Massachusetts, and thence came to Meadville, PA, where he married and settled on a
farm in Warren County. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. In 1847 he removed to Chautauqua County, NY.
He was the father of seven children.

She was a relative of President Fillmore, and Hon. Jabe Sutherland, judge in Utah Territory, while his brother Oren is a prominent attorney of the Chicago bar.
