General Notes: Husband - Louis B. Stein
He was born in Butler, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the public schools and at Witherspoon Institute. In May, 1873, he was chosen book-keeper of the First National Bank of Butler, was appointed teller in 1877, and filled that position until the failure of the bank in July, 1879. He then entered the employ of Joseph Horne & Company, of Pittsburgh, where he filled the position of book-keeper for two years, and then returned to Butler to take charge of the books of L. Stein & Son. On February 11, 1885, he was appointed teller of the Butler Savings Bank, which position he filled for some years.
Politically he was a Republican, and a member of the German Lutheran church.
He received his education in the Butler public schools and in Witherspoon Academy. His first employment was with the Joseph Horne Company, one of the large department stores of Pittsburgh, in the capacity of bookkeeper. After three years in this position, he returned to Butler and became associated with his father in the concern of L. Stein & Son, one of the pioneer dry goods stores of Butler. Mr. Stein was connected with this enterprise until February 11, 1885, on which date he first entered the employ of the Butler Savings Bank, later the Butler Savings and Trust Company. From that time he gave forty consecutive years of service to the organization, serving first as clerk, later as teller and then as cashier, succeeding William Campbell, and remaining in this position until the bank was made the Butler Savings and Trust Company, when he was elected to the office of secretary and treasurer. He rendered service as a member of the board of directors of the old Butler Hospital, and during the World War he was among the most active workers on the Liberty Bond drives. In politics Mr. Stein was a Republican, and his religious connections were with St. Mark's Lutheran Church, in which he served two terms as elder. He was a member of the Butler Country Club, the Sterling Club of Butler, and the Butler Board of Commerce. [PAH, 58]
