After marriage, they settled in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and lived there about one year, when they returned to Indiana County.

When her youngest child was only about four years old, she was left the burden of providing for her family. This she did all by hard work, such as weaving on the old fashioned loom, spinning, working in the field in harvest, hoeing corn, clipping sheep, etc. In 1852 she was left the care of two grandchildren, in addition to her own family. She had a remarkable constitution, never knowing what it was to be sick until she was 70 years old, when cancer made its first appearance on her face, and caused her death at the age of 82 years.
