He was educated at the Vermillion Institute at Hayesville, Ohio, then read medicine with Dr. Ansley, of Apollo, now of Saltsburg, and entered Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, in 1875, graduating therefrom in 1877. He located at Rimersburg, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where he practiced until 1883 when he removed to Donegal, Westmoreland County. Dr. Whitworth adhered to the teachings of the Republican party.
