General Notes: Husband - Joseph Walker Steel
He resided at, and managed, the family home farm near Hannastown, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
He resided with his two sisters, Clara M. and Sarah J. Steel, on the old Steel farm at Hannastown, of which he was part owner, and he also was a partner of Judge John B. Steel in the ownership of the old John Steel farm of one hundred and seventy acres which stood on the Lincoln Highway, east of Greensburg, near the town of Latrobe, which he and his brother rent. Mr. Steel was very successful in his agricultural operations and raised and fattened cattle on his farm, which produced a carload of the best type every year. He was also a breeder of Clydesdale horses and in this line did a very successful and remunerative business. This business was originated by his father but was carried on and developed by the son. The house in which Mr. Steel made his home occupied a splendid location and was a large and handsome brick building which was erected by his father in 1866. The large frame barn was erected two years later after the house. Mr. Steel also had a fine modern silo. Mr. Steel's farm was in the great bituminous region and overlay a rich deposit of coal, which was sold to the Jamison Coal Company.
In politics he was a staunch supporter of the principles and policies of the Republican party. His mother and sisters were affiliated with the Church of the Covenanters, while Mr. Steel stood ever ready to contribute financially to its needs.
