He wrote, "I was born June 15th, 1742, in Germany, in a small village named Putmiga, within two miles of the City of Basil, which lies on the Rhine; and immigrated to America with parents when seven years of age."

He came to America at the age of seven years and then on to Opequon Creek with the family. He married and they settled in Ohio County, West Virginia, in 1774 at Short Creek.
