He graduated from a course of mechanical engineering at Cornell University in the class of 1878. For more than a dozen years he was employed on different railroads as master mechanic, master car builder, etc., and eventually became superintendent of motive power on the Ohio River and Charleston Railroad at Blacksburg, South Carolina.
