He was born on his father's farm in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and came with his parents to Allen township, Washington County, when a boy. He then always resided in Allen township, but he also owned land in Wooster, Ohio. In politics he was an active Republican, having held various local offices. [CBRWC, 1219]

He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. He was a farmer whose life was uneventful and lived to a good old age.
