General Notes: Husband - Rev. James Welch

He was born and reared in eastern Pennsylvania, and when a young man came to Washington County. After his marriage he settled on an unimproved farm in Independence township, which thereafter remained in the family for many decades. Politically he was a Whig, taking an active part in local politics. He was a leading member of the Associate Reformed Church, in which he served as an elder many years, and toward which he was a liberal contributor.

He came into Hopewell township, Washington County, soon after 1788, and settled upon a tract of land adjoining that of Arthur Scott.

When his first wife died she left her husband one hundred acres of land, which had been her portion of the Smith patent.
