General Notes: Husband - Roger Mead Smiley
He received his early education in the public schools and later entered the oil business, being the youngest man ever appointed to the position of oil-buyer by the Standard Oil Company. He received this appointment when eighteen years of age and continued in that capacity for some years, and then became assistant to his father at the Knox, Pennsylvania, office of the Seep Purchasing Agency, and on February 1, 1892, when his father was transferred to Foxburg, Pennsylvania, he succeeded him in charge of the office at Knox.
