September 3, 1833, son of John and Maria (Westerman) Smalley,
He was a native of Manchester, England, a shoemaker, and emigrated to America about 1834, settling in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, where he continued to follow his trade for about twelve years. He also spent a year or more in East Liverpool, Ohio. He purchased a farm in what is now Jefferson township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, to which he removed in 1844, and on which he resided until his death.
He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church, he being a regular attendant and devout member of the Knox chapel, in Winfield township, during most of his residence in Butler County.
He and his wife were the parents of eleven children, three of whom were still living in 1895.
