The family name Sloan, or Sloane, is derived from the Gaelic Sluigean, a glutton; as the Scottish Dictionary cites it "a greedy sloan;" used as a nickname. The armorial bearings described herewith are recorded by Burke for Sloan without designation of locality.
Alexander Sloane was one of the officers who served Charles I before June 5, 1649, and at the Restoration received grants in Ireland to settle arrears of pay. He was of Killeleagh, County Down, receiver general to Lord Claneboy, and was the father of Sir Hans Sloane, born 1660, made baronet in April, 1716; title extinct in 1753. James Sloan, who was also with Lord Claneboy, probably belonged to the same family; and William Sloane was at Six Mile-Water quarters in Antrim.
