He was reared on his father's farm and received his early education at McKeesport, Pennsylvania, later attending Allegheny College, at Meadville, from which institution he was graduated. He then engaged in the dry goods business at McKeesport, on his own account, and afterward moving to Braddock, Allegheny County, established a business in the wholesale grocery and produce line.
