General Notes: Husband - Isaac Shupe
He was known as an energetic and successful business man, and carried on farming in connection with milling, tanning, and the mercantile business. In conjunction with his son he erected the extensive flouring-mills in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, which were later operated by Mr. O. P. Shupe. [HWC 1882, 551]
He was born on the homestead in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and on reaching manhood settled on a farm adjoining the borough of Mount Pleasant, where he engaged extensively in the pursuit of agriculture. He also owned and operated several saw mills in the county and built one grist mill on the corner of Main and Diamond streets. This he operated with a treadmill power, but the venture was not successful, and in 1845 he began the erection of a mill which was later the property of his grandson, O. P. Shupe, of Mount Pleasant. He was likewise the owner of a tannery, a general mercantile establishment, and teams for carrying freight from Pittsburgh to Baltimore and Wheeling. He was one of the eminently successful business men of that part of the country, his success being largely the result of his close and unwearied application. [HWC 1906 III, 495]
He and his wife were born in Scotland. [BHCWC, 510]
