General Notes: Husband - John Turner

In 1788, he and his brother Alexander sailed for America. About two years after their arrival in the new country, while riding a spirited young horse, and having a mowing scythe in his hand, the animal became frightened and threw him. In his fall he was badly cut about the thigh on the scythe. It is believed that the wound was not necessarily mortal. The physicians desired to amputate the limb, but he obstinately refused to permit the operation, saying, "When I go out of this world I am going to take my leg with me." Gangrene soon set in causing his death. He was about twenty years old the time of his death. He was buried on the banks of the Hudson river near Poughkeepsie, New York.
