He was born in Amwell township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and received his education at the same school-house which his father had attended in his boyhood days. He settled on the home farm.
He was an active worker in the Republican party, and was school director twenty-six or more years in succession. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Upper Ten-Mile.
