He attended the public schools in White and Center townships, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and later studied at the State normal school at Indiana. After thus thoroughly preparing for his chosen profession he began to teach school, in 1907 becoming the teacher of District No. 10 school, in Center township. In 1909 he became the teacher at Brush Hollow, and then accepted the position of principal of the Risinger school, at North Homer. He was a member of the United Brethren Church.
