He served in the Union Army in the Civil War and was wounded while in the service. After his discharge, he completed his studies at Eldersridge Academy, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and Washington and Jefferson College, and later graduated at the Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. His first pastoral charge was in Washington, Iowa, suceeded by others at Hannibal, Missouri, the Eighth Presbyterian church, Chicago, Illinois, and Hinsdale, Illinois.
