Until he was seventeen years of age he divided his time between the district school and the home farm. After he had grown to manhood he became possessed of four hundred acres for a homestead, located south of the Greenville road in Sandy Creek and Perry Townships, Mercer County, PA, and included a part of his father's six hundred acres. There for the remainder of his life he engaged in farming during the seasonable months and in charcoal burning during the winter, his product being carried to the old Mineral Ridge furnace south of Hadley. He was an industrious, quiet, honorable man, with no ambition for office or public affairs. [HMC 1909, 1057]
