He re­ceived his early education in the public schools, and later entered his father's store, and after the death of his father continued the business in partnership with his brother, Henry R., the title of the firm being changed in 1904 to Shawkey Brothers, of which he became the junior partner. He was the manager of the original store at Shawkey's Corners. He was a Republican in politics.
