According to the record of land grants and conveyances, he was located on the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in 1784. He was one of the earliest settlers in the Trough Creek Valley, of what is now Huntingdon County. There is on record in the latter county, the will of one Peter Thompson (book 2/69) dated 23 February, 1811, probated 13 March, 1811, mentioning certain children, but not Ignatius; although "to the rest of my children" he bequeathes "a French crown apiece" indicating that some are unmentioned. This will is witnessed by William Norris and John Norris, Jr. and it is known that the Thompson and Norris families were closely associated in Huntingdon County at this period.

He and his antecedents were of the Roman Catholic faith - as was Ignatius. The head of this line, John Thompson, is said to have migrated from Yorkshire, England, to southern Maryland about 1680 in order to enjoy greater religious freedom. The Norris family had apparently come to Huntingdon County from Washington County, Maryland, following the Revolution.
