Having accepted a clerkship in the War Department, he removed from Iowa to Washington City in 1865. He resigned this clerkship in the same year to accept one in the Register's office of the Treasury Department, having charge of the receipts and expenditures of the government.
The family was connected with the Metropolitan Presbyterian church.
