The name of Shannon is well known in the history of Ireland, and to that country all the American Shannons trace their ancestry. These ancestors lived on the banks of the river Shannon, Ireland, and were mainly engaged in agriculture.

His father came to America prior to the days of the American Revolution and was engaged in the occupation of packing salt from Philadelphia.
