General Notes: Husband - Ulrich Neukomer

He was born in that part of Switzerland called Teutonic Switzerland, of German parentage. He came to America in 1755 and located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was a strong adherent of the rigid Mennonite faith, and ordered his life according to the peculiar tenets of that church.

It is said that Ulrich Newcomer was born in Switzerland, and raised and educated in that country; that he came to America about 1755, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was married twice.

It is claimed by one branch of the family that the children of Ulrich Neukomer were by his first wife, with the exception of Barbara, who was by the second. There must be error here, for it is well established that certain of his children were born in Pennsylvania. It is also stated that the first wife of Ulrich died on shipboard on the voyage across the Atlantic. If this be so, some children attributed to her must be of the second wife.

She is said to have been brought to America by a married couple, who fostered her in her youth. They lost (probably on shipboard) the money with which they left the old country, and on arriving at an American port the three were sold for their passage money, according to the custom of that day. Magdalena served for a time under bond, but later was redeemed by members of the Mennonite sect, among whom was Ulrich Neukomer, who married her. There is no record of the marriage date, but it was not long after his coming to America, his first wife having died on the voyage across the Atlantic.

Ulrich Neukomer and his second wife Magdalena came to America on the same ship, she being somewhat advanced in years. Probably he was not well furnished with cash, but as soon as possible raised the money for Magdalena's redemption among his Mennonite friends, and soon made her his second wife. The family home was in that part of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, later set off as York County.
