When fourteen years of age, he won the finals in a marbles tournament, June 21, 1941, spon-sored by the Buffalo Evening News, and became the champion for Buffalo and Erie Counties. This victory made him a candidate for honors in the National Tournament at Wildwood, New York, with his expenses and that of an escort paid. He selected his mother as escort. He won the New York title and was a runner-up in the semi-finals for the National finals.
