He was reared in his native township, and received a com­mon-school education. He was successively a farmer, lumberman, real estate dealer, and became an oil producer in 1879, residing most of his life within the limits of Forest County. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and of the P. O. S. of A. Politically he was a Republican.
