He was a merchant. He filled the offices of sheriff of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and member of assembly.

He was endowed with an inexhaustible fund of humor, which attracted all classes of people to him, not only the mirthful but the serious and sedate. His was fun and wit, without vulgarity
