General Notes: Husband - Simon Peter Scholl

In 1810 the Census showed Peter Shull and David Shull as Householders in Washington township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, who were not there in 1800 nor in 1820. It seems likely that they were the two brothers, sons of Simon Peter, one of whom remained in Pennsylvania and the other with two other brothers, Philip and Burkhard, went on to Hamilton County, Ohio.

He was a miller by trade.

Notes: Marriage

Their children:
1. Elizabeth Shull, born October 18, 1798; married February 13, 1818, Adam Cole.
2. Magdalena Shull, born September 27, 1801.
3. John Shull, born January 1, 1802; married March 7, 1824, Mary Devin. From Hamilton County, Ohio, he moved to Indiana.
4. Simon Peter Shull, born August 31, 1803.
5. William Martin Shull, born August 21, 1806.
6. David Shull, born September 27, 1808: married Jane [Unk]. Resided in Switzerland County, Indiana.
7. Daniel Shull, born March 22, 1811.
8. Rebecca Shull, born September 16, 1813; married Joseph Boyd.
9. William Jacob Shull, born December 21, 1815; married (1) Lucinda Cole; married (2) Elizabeth Kile; married (3) Mrs. Nancy Ellen (Smith) Ludwig.
10. Mary Ann Shull, born September 15, 1818; married (1) November 9, 1837, Jeremiah Cole; married (2) Jacob Showalter.

The data for this family rest largely on the following memorandum in illiterate English written on the back of the birth and baptismal certificate of Simon Peter, their father: "Peter Shull was born July 6, 1773. Catherine Shup was born the 2nd of March in the year of our Lord 1777. Married in the December 12th in the year of our Lord 1797. (To) Peter Shull and Catherine Shup in the year of our Lord 1798 born the child Elizabeth Shull in the 18th of October 1798. Diniel Sreder crisend the child Elizabeth in the 16th of December in the sed year Dec. 16, 1798. In the year of our Lord 1801 September 27 the child born 1801 and chrisen the chald Mottolena. The forst day of January born John Shull his godfather and godmother Jacob Flebre, Safia Flebre. In the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and three August the thorty forst the child wors born and wors crisend Simon Peter Shull by Giriener crisend the 13th of November his grandfather godfather 1803. William Marten wors born the 21st of August 1806 crisend by one Mano the 14th December 1806. Son David was born the 27th of September, 1808. Son Daniel worse born the 22nd of March 1811. William Jacob is born December 21, 1815. Mary Ann is born September 15, 1818."
This omits entirely the daughter Rebecca and is undecisive for John. The "first day of January" next possible after September 27, 1801 would have to be 1803, and that would leave time for another child the following November, or October, but hardly by the last day of August. There must be an error in the record, but at present there is no means of discovering the truth. Mottolena may have been born in 1800, which would leave time for the two following items.
Unfortunately, the Court House at Cincinnati was burned by a mob back in the 1880s and the early records were so damaged and some of them so nearly totally destroyed, that it is difficult to recover anything from the official records concerning him or his family.
David Shull of this family certainly located later in Switzerland County, Indiana, where he was listed by the U. S. Census of 1860 as aged 57 (? 52), a miller by trade with real estate worth $12,000 and personal estate $964, with wife Jane Shull, aged 47, and two children at home, Sarah E. Shull, aged 18, who afterward married a Jackson, and Edward C. Shull, aged 12, who married (1) April 12, 1871, Clarissa M. Cotton and (2) March 4, 1894, Flora Stevens, who survived him and in 1928 was living at Vevey, Indiana. There was an earlier daughter Mary Jane Shull, who married July 7, 1852, Edward H. Rogers.
John M. Shull of this family located also in Switzerland County, Indiana, where he was a farmer, aged 58, with real estate $6280 and personal estate $822. His wife was Hannah H. Shull, aged 50, who may have been a second wife, if the marriage to Mary Devin in Hamilton County, Ohio, is correct. Three children were at home, Elizabeth, aged 23, Mary, aged 19, and John Moore Shull, aged 11. Probably he had a son Joseph L. Shull, aged 28, who lived next door and had wife Eleanor J. Cole, whom he had married October 9, 1856, and who had a son Cassius C. Shull, aged 2 years. The above daughters are probably the Elizabeth Shull who on September 7, 1860, married Alexander Scudder, and Mary Shull who on March 1, 1863, married Harvey Scudder.
