He was educated in the public schools and Waterford Academy, spending the years of youth and manhood until 1907 at the home farm. In that year he entered the employ of the Wheeler Lumber Company and spent a year in West Virginia. In 1908 he purchased the furniture and undertaking business of James A. Boyd in Waterford. He was a Democrat in politics and a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows Orders, and both he and his wife were members of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
