He was born in Quebec, Canada. He left his home at the age of sixteen and went to New York City, where he worked at various jobs. He learned the painter's trade, and in 1893 came to Butler, Pennsylvania, and engaged in the painting contracting business, in which he was active until his death.
He was a Democrat and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.
