General Notes: Husband - Christian [2] Schaeublin

He kept notes in his Bible, which provide some insight into his life. He learned the craft of a blacksmith. He married and they settled in his home village of Obendorf where the name became Shively.

He and his wife had about thirteen children between 1708 and 1731.

In the early months of 1736 people who were being persecuted for their opposition to the organized church began to hold meetings in the blacksmith shop of Christian Schaeublin. The government opposed these meetings, and so in the summer of 1736 Christian Schaeublin left his village of Oberdorf along with others and went to America. They went down the Rhine River from Basel to Rotterdam where the family took passage on the "Princess Augusta" whose captain was Samuel Marchant. In accordance with British law, the Princess Augusta stopped at Cowes, England on the Isle of Wight, where she received clearance to continue her voyage to America. She arrived at Philadelphia on 16 September 1736. Among the 330 persons on board with Christian Schaeublin and his family were two other men who were related to his wife, Barbara Spitteler. They were Hance Spietteler (45 years old), her brother and Hance Spietteler (17 years old), his son. The older son of Christian Schaeublin also was listed as Christian Sheibly (17 years old). The family name had now changed from Schaeublin to Shively. Two other groups related to the others on the ship were the Keller and Thommen families. Johannes Keller and his son, Johannes, were on the passenger list along with Durst Thommen (Thorne) and his sons Martin, Hance Jocob and Durst. All these families included others since the passenger lists of that time only recorded a few of the names of the women and children.

While the disposition of these families was not checked, the group probably continued on to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where there was a large group of Swiss immigrants. After leaving Philadelphia, Christian Shively (Schaeublin) and his wife, Barbara Elizabeth Spittler, settled in Warwick Township of Lancaster County. The Thommen family also must have gone there with them because Ulrich (Ullery) Shively, the son of Christian Shively and Barbara Spittler married Elizabeth Thommen in about 1743 in Lancaster County. These two young people must have met on the ship, since they came from different locations in the Basel Canton of Switzerland.
