He grew to maturity in Burrell township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and was engaged in farming there, owning a place of 120 acres which came down to him from his great-grandfather. He was school director two years and also served as constable. In politics he was connected with the Democratic party. His family were members of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, the Brick Church.
