He was born in London, England, and came to America when a boy, and lived with a family in eastern New York state. On reaching his maturity he was married to a young English woman. Soon after his marriage he moved to Erie County, Pennsylvania, locating in Washington township, where his wife died.

With his second wife he had ten children: five boys and five girls.
