General Notes: Husband - John Bauder, Sr.
He learned the cooper's trade in youth, and in 1831 immigrated with his parents to Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, where he found employment upon the construction of the Pittsburgh and Allegheny aqueduct, of the Pennsyl-vania canal. He afterwards engaged in the dairy business, and then purchased a farm six miles west of Allegheny City, where he lived until the spring of 1852. At that time he removed to Butler County, purchasing 450 acres of land in Muddy Creek township. In 1867 he and his son Henry erected a mill, later operated by the latter, who pur-chased his father's interest in 1870. In that year Mr. Bauder retired from active business, and spent the remaining years of his life on his farm. Politi-cally, he was a Whig in early days, and afterwards a Republican. He and his wife were members of the German Reformed church, in which society he filled the office of deacon.
He was born in Switzerland and first came to America in 1828. He subsequently returned to his native land, was married there, and in 1832 returned to the new world, accompanied by his wife and their one child, John, and his parents. Upon reaching Erie, Pennsylvania, they purchased a horse, having brought a wagon with them from Switzerland, and hauled their possessions from Erie to Allegheny County, but the members of the party made the journey afoot. John Bauder was a cooper by trade, as was his father, and he also followed carpentering some years. He engaged in the dairy business in Allegheny County, but finally sold out there and moved to near Portersville, Butler County, where he owned some 500 acres of land. He lived and farmed there until his death at the age of seventy-nine years.
