He acquired his education in the common schools of Hannastown, Pennsylvania, and as soon as he had attained a suitable age he assisted his father on the latter's farm. He thus acquired a thorough and practical knowledge of what later became his life work. He affiliates with the Republican party, and is a member of the Lutheran church.
