He was reared in Brady Township, Butler county, PA, and there attended the district schools, then entered West Sunbury Acad­emy, later attending Grove City College. He then turned his attention to the study of medicine and in 1882 entered old Jef­ferson College, Philadelphia, where he was a student in 1882-3 and in the latter year entered the medical department of the Western Reserve College at Cleveland, Ohio, where he was graduated and received his medical degree, in 1885. He immedi­ately settled at West Liberty and there built up a large and lucrative practice. He and his.family were members of the United Presbyterian Church. [HBC 1909, 1399]
