He was reared in Brady Township, Butler county, PA, and there attended the district schools, then entered West Sunbury Academy, later attending Grove City College. He then turned his attention to the study of medicine and in 1882 entered old Jefferson College, Philadelphia, where he was a student in 1882-3 and in the latter year entered the medical department of the Western Reserve College at Cleveland, Ohio, where he was graduated and received his medical degree, in 1885. He immediately settled at West Liberty and there built up a large and lucrative practice. He and his.family were members of the United Presbyterian Church. [HBC 1909, 1399]
