He was brought up on a farm, while enjoying good advantages at school during boyhood. In 1881 he began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. A. Logan in Woodcock borough, Pennsylvania, and continued there five years, during which time he took two courses of lectures in the medical department of the Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio, and a course at the Western University in Pennsylvania, finally receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Beginning in 1889 he practiced his chosen profession at Titusville.
