The McGregors are of Scotch origin, and are descendants of the McGregor family of Scotland, which was so prominent in the military history of that country during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

He was born and reared in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, from which he came in 1844 to Armstrong County. He worked for many years on public works. He was a republican in politics, and a member of the Reformed church.
