Her parents both died while quite young and she and her four siblings were reared in the family of their father's uncle, John Michael Fennell, a wealthy farmer of Loyalhanna township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, who rendered much assistance to each and presented each of the brothers with a farm.
