General Notes: Husband - William Smith
Among the first settlers of what is now Center township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, was William Smith. In the year 1772 he located on a tract of land, which was afterwards owned by Jos. Clawson, and resided there for a number of years. When the Indians presented danger in that vicinity he took his wife and child to Wallace's fort. He returned to his cabin to get his plow irons and other farming implements, and was there the very day that Laughlin, Campbell and others were captured and taken off by the Indians, not a mile away. After the hostile Indians had left he took his family back to his improvement, and shortly after was again driven away by the appearance of hostile natives. This time he took shelter at Donohue's, above Blairsville. Being in constant dread of Indians, he returned to Conococheaque, in Franklin County, his original home. He took part in the Revolutionary struggle, serving in the Pennsylvania line. After the war returned to Indiana County and improved his lands. During his absence of seven years his cabin had not been disturbed. Here he resided until his death. He left his farm to his two sons.
