He had an adventur­ous disposition, for though only a boy at the time of the gold excitement on the Pacific coast, he went out there about 1849 and re­mained several years. He returned to Canada about 1854. In 1867 he came to Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where he spent the remainder of his life in oil operations as one of the active figures on the Oil Exchange and also as a producer. He acquired considerable property in the region, living on a farm near the site later occupied by the Grandview Sanitarium, and not long before his death buying a property, part of the Adam Cope farm, which became known as Rich Hill. Here he had a residence erected, which he never lived to occupy, dying in Oil City, at the home of his friend, Judson Trax. He was a Methodist, being one of the founders of Trinity M. E. Church, Oil City.
