He was educated in the common schools, and spent his early life in Warren County, Pennsylvania. In 1884 went to South Dakota and farmed two years, returned to Sugargrove, Pennsylvania, and engaged in the hardware business, and subsequently removed to Decatur, Illinois, where he worked at his trade of tinsmith.
